Foods that Help Reduce Stress

During times of stress, it's easy to turn to "comfort foods" like breads, cheese, and sweets. However, these foods leave us feeling lethargic and less energized to deal with stress. Eating these foods when stressed is a very unhealthy combination, as stress raises your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Instead, reach for any of these foods to help you overcome stress in a healthy way!

  • Avocados: This dark green fruit is excellent for overall brain health and decreasing anxiety.  They contain B vitamins and healthy fats that boost brain health.
  • Oysters:  This superfood of the sea is packed with zinc.  Zinc helps to balance the trace mineral ratio in the body, which can enhance neurotransmitter function and adaptation to stress.
  • Dark Chocolate:  Research has shown that people who eat 1.5 ounces of dark chocolate per day feel less stressed than those who do not.
  • Asparagus:  This nutrient rich vegetable contains folic acid, a specific B vitamin.  Low folic acid intake is linked to increased anxiety.  Increasing dietary intake of folic acid may decrease stress levels.
  • Leafy Greens:  If you find you are frequently stressed, increase your intake of greens.  Swiss chard, spinach, kale, and beet greens are some of the best sources of magnesium, which helps with muscle relaxation.
  • Omega- 3 rich Meat:  Meats rich in omega-3 fats, such as salmon, tuna, and grass-fed beef, can decrease anxiety.  Omega rich foods decrease cortisol, the stress hormone, which promotes relaxation.
  • Chamomile Tea:  The dried flowers of sweet chamomile used to make this tea provide a remedy for stress.  Sipping this tea has been shown to reduce anxiety symptoms.
